Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers had wanted to bring Scott McTominay to Scotland in the January transfer window.
Rangers wanted to sign McTominay from Manchester United in the January transfer window, as they felt the attacking midfielder could have improved the squad at Ibrox.
Rangers felt a loan deal could have suited United, as they would have been able to develop the Scottish youth international.
However, Jose Mourinho has batted away Rangers’ attempts to sign the 22-year-old, as he wants to keep McTominay at Old Trafford.
McTominay has regularly been included in United’s match day squads this season, and Mourinho has decided that a move to Rangers would not help the prospect’s progress.
Rangers will now have to look elsewhere to improve the quality of their midfield ranks in January.
Rangers spent fairly heavily in the summer, but may have to reinvest if they are to add the desired quality.
Rangers have been caught short this season, and they have failed to provide any competition for Celtic.
The Ibrox side are currently in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership table – and sit 10 points behind their Glasgow rivals after just 15 matches have been played.
