Tottenham Hotspur could be about to miss out on Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez.
According to Marca, Atletico Madrid duo Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin have been speaking to Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez in a bid to tempt him int joining them.
Uruguayan hitman Gomez, 22, joined Celta from Defensor Sporting in 2017, and enjoyed a fine first season with the club, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.
This term, Gomez has been in red-hot form again, notching a hugely impressive eight goals and four assists in 13 La Liga outings for the Galician side.
Unsurprisingly, the burly forward is attracting major interest ahead of the January transfer window, and El Pais recently reported that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on luring Gomez to North London.
However, Mauricio Pochettino may be about to miss out on Gomez, as Atletico Madrid have joined the race, and may just have a secret weapon or two up their sleeve.
Spanish newspaper Marca claim that Gomez’s Uruguayan international team-mates Gimenez and Godin – two Atletico stars – have been talking to the striker in order to talk up Atleti and tempt him into signing.
Atleti don’t want to spend the £45million in Gomez’s release clause, but allegedly see Gomez as the ideal heir to Diego Costa in attack – and that may leave Tottenham lagging behind in the race for his signature.
