The Rangers midfielder Jamie Barjonas is wanted by one of Steven Gerrard’s former teammates, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that Oldham Athletic, managed by the ex-Liverpool winger Harry Kewell, are trying to land Barjonas on loan from Ibrox.

The Rangers academy product was on the bench as Gerrard’s side drew 2-2 with Hibernian on Sunday, but the Gers boss is said to be keen for him to get more first-team football.

And Daniel Johnson’s arrival could have an adverse effect on Barjonas’s chances of achieving that at Ibrox.

Rangers hope to bring in Johnson in a £3 million deal from Oldham’s Lancashire rivals Preston North End ahead of Sunday’s trip to Motherwell, according to The Scottish Sun.

But the newspaper claims there are still some issues to be resolved.

As a result, any move for Barjonas could be on hold until then.

The Scotland youth international was born in Leeds, where Kewell played before joining Gerrard at Liverpool, and previously spent time in Oldham’s neck of the woods with Bury.

Barjonas’s Rangers contract is due to expire at the end of this season.
