According to The Chronicle, Steven Gerrard remains keen on bringing Newcastle forward Jacob Murphy to Ibrox.
The Chronicle mention how the ex-Norwich winger’s resurgence at St James’ Park won’t please the Gers boss, who had hoped to sign Murphy in the summer and remains keen to do so.
Interestingly, the report also states that the London-born attacker is one player who has held early talks regarding a new contract at St James’ Park.
Last season, the 25-year-old – who cost Newcastle £12 million – spent the campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
He impressed for Garry Monk’s side, scoring nine goals and recording four assists which seems to have forced Steve Bruce into giving him a chance.
So far this term, Murphy has made just two Premier League appearances for the Magpies, but netted a late free-kick against Wolves last time out to secure a point in his first league start this season.
The Northern Echo reported back in pre-season that the Englishman’s name was actually on a list of players who Bruce wanted sold.
In that respect, he has done well to turn his Newcastle career around, although that won’t be welcome news to Gerrard.
If Murphy keeps delivering the goods for Bruce, it seems unlikely that he’ll be moving to Rangers anytime soon.
