Rangers are reportedly bringing Neil Banfield to Ibrox.

According to The Times, Rangers are appointing ex-Arsenal man Neil Banfield to Steven Gerrard’s scouting department ahead of the January transfer window.

The Gers have undergone many changes since the end of last season, starting with the appointment of Gerrard as manager and the arrivals of Gary McAllister, Tom Culshaw, Michael Beale and Jordan Milsom.

Gerrard also oversaw 15 arrivals to his playing squad, and now he looks set to add another new face to his backroom staff – and more specifically, the recruitment side.

The Times report that Gerrard is moving to appoint Neil Banfield to his staff, giving him a role in the Rangers scouting department ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Banfield, 56, is a former Crystal Palace defender who first joined the Arsenal ranks in 1997, and coached the academy, then the reserves and then the first team in a lengthy tenure under Arsene Wenger.

Banfield left the Gunners alongside Wenger at the end of last season, and has been out of work since – but now returns to football with Rangers if reports are to be believed.

After a lengthy career in coaching, it’s something of a surprise to see Banfield head into scouting, but he will bring a knowledge of English football to the Rangers scouting ranks – and possibly links to land players from Arsenal.
