Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini really doesn’t want the club to sell Cristian Romero – but he wants to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb in Italy, who claim that the Atalanta boss would rather not lose Romero if the decision was solely up to him.

However, the push made by Fabio Paratici and Nuno Espirito Santo to bring Romero to Tottenham has proved decisive.

Romero wants the move to Tottenham, and Spurs remain in talks with Atalanta over a deal to bring him to North London.

This would be the second time director of football Paratici has signed Romero, having landed him for Juventus in the summer of 2019.

Romero never actually played for Juve though, instead heading out on loan to Genoa and Atalanta, with Gasperini helping him thrive with the latter.

Romero has predominantly played in the centre of a back three under Gasperini, though he is also able to play on the right side of a three if needed.

At Tottenham, Romero is likely to play in a four-man back line, and he has certainly learned how to play out from the back under the progressive methods of Gasperini.

Atalanta are a great side to watch, but they are sadly vulnerable to losing key players from the well-oiled machine they have created in recent years.

Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has signed for Tottenham already this summer, so Gasperini will hate to see another part of his back line leave – especially to the same club!

For Tottenham though, convincing Romero that they are the right move is a major step in the right direction under Paratici and potentially another fine signing after Gollini and Bryan Gil.
