Sunderland are reportedly set to speak to Garry Monk this week.
Ex-Leeds United manager Gary Monk
According to The Telegraph, Sunderland are expected to hold talks with Garry Monk later this week about becoming the club’s new manager.
The Black Cats suffered relegation to the Championship by a huge margin, finishing 16 points adrift of safety in a dismal campaign under David Moyes.
David Moyes
Moyes resigned from his post as manager just 24 hours after the end of the season, leaving Sunderland searching for yet another new manager having gone through the likes of Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat and Sam Allardyce in recent years.
The current favourite for the job with bookmakers (Oddschecker) is Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, and The Telegraph report that he is indeed a top target for Sunderland – but his reservations over the club’s transfer budget mean alternatives are being eyed.

The report claims that Garry Monk is now expected to speak to Sunderland this week, but he will also be holding talks with rivals Middlesbrough as the two North East rivals seek new managers.
Middlesbrough parted ways with Aitor Karanka in March, and after Steve Agnew took charge of the club until the end of the season, the search for a permanent manager is now on.
Garry Monk
With both clubs relegated to the Championship, Monk’s decision may come down to transfer budgets, and Middlesbrough look to be in a much better financial position than Sunderland right now.
The 38-year-old left his position as Leeds manager last month, and could engineer a swift return to management having impressed at Elland Road this past season, sealing a seventh-placed finish in his first and only campaign in charge.
