According to the Sunderland Echo, Garry Monk is open to taking the Sunderland job after his shock departure from Leeds United last month.
Monk, 38, had been out of work for six months following his departure from Swansea City before being appointed as Steve Evans’ replacement in the Leeds hot seat in June 2016.

Whilst Monk had Leeds on the verge of a top six place, a late collapse saw the Whites slip to seventh place and ultimately miss out on the play-offs – and the 1-1 draw at Wigan on the final day of the season proved to be his final game in charge.
Last month, Monk handed in his resignation despite Leeds’ attempts to keep him beyond his one-year rolling deal, leaving the Whites to find a replacement and leaving Monk to consider his next move.

As a young and talented English manager, Monk won’t be short of offers this summer, and the Sunderland Echo now report that Monk is at least open to taking the Sunderland job, with talks imminent.
Sunderland suffered relegation to the Championship after a dismal campaign in which they finished 16 points shy of safety, with manager David Moyes resigning from his post just 24 hours after the end of the Premier League season.

Monk would be a huge coup for Sunderland in their current state, with a limited budget and key players such as Jordan Pickford, Lamine Kone and Jermain Defoe potentially on their way out of the club.
Convincing Monk to take on that job over another club such as Middlesbrough could be difficult, but Sunderland have been given a boost by Monk’s approach to the club, with the ex-Leeds man at least willing to consider a move to the Stadium of Light.
