According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle United have made contact with the representatives of Lens winger Gael Kakuta.
Reports from the Daily Mail on Monday suggested that Newcastle were pursuing Kakuta alongside Crystal Palace and Watford.
Now, these new reports in France suggest that the Magpies have already made contact with Kakuta’s representatives in the hope of securing a deal.
Newcastle wanted to find out whether Kakuta is open to a summer move, but he is focused on the end of the season with Lens and not on a move to St James’ Park, ignoring their interest for now.
That means Newcastle may face something of a wait if they want to sign Kakuta, who has endured a real nomadic career.
Now 29, the playmaker was a hot young prospect at Chelsea, and whilst they got in hot water over how they signed him, the Blues had high hopes for him.

In 2009, Carlo Ancelotti suggested that he had never seen somebody of Kakuta’s age – 18 at the time – with so much talent.
After six loan spells away from Chelsea, Kakuta left for good in 2015, but has ended up with Sevilla, Hebei China Fortune, Deportivo La Coruna, Amiens, Rayo Vallecano, Amiens again and now Lens.
With 11 goals and five assists for Lens this season, Kakuta has been in sensational form, and Newcastle may hope that he can bring that attacking ability to St James’ Park next season.
