According to the Daily Mail, Fulham have failed with a move to sign Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis.

It’s claimed that Fulham made a loan-to-buy bid for Luis, but Benfica have rejected their opening offer.

Fulham may well return for Luis, especially as Villarreal are pursuing loanee Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa permanently following a loan spell in Spain.

Benfica are seemingly seeking greater terms for Luis, who has been tipped for a bright future despite seeing his progress stall.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, the 21-year-old has impressed with his ability to protect his back four, possessing a strong reading of the game as well as bite in the tackle.

However, Luis played just 10 league games last season, and may now need to move on if he is to fulfil his potential.

Fulham aren’t alone in the race for Luis, as the Mail claimed earlier this month that Leeds have asked about a potential deal for the Portuguese ace.

Fulham tried to seize the initiative with a first move for Luis, but they have now failed – and Leeds may be eyeing the situation as the battle for his signature continues.
