Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have been in the spotlight this week after it became apparent that they are looking to sell Liverpool.
That is according to The Athletic, with FSG’s transfer policy among the topics of discussion amid claims from the Mirror that they no longer feel able to compete with Saudi Arabian ownership.
Now, the Daily Mail have shared another interesting nugget of information.
Liverpool almost signed Tchouameni
Well, Dominic King has described the notion that FSG have not backed Jürgen Klopp financially as nonsense.
To add to that, the Daily Mail journalist believes Liverpool’s American ownership had a £60m deal lined up to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, before Darwin Nunez arrived in a £64m move from Benfica.

Only the France international’s desire to join Real Madrid over the Reds thwarted the deal.
Eventually, Liverpool failed to find an alternative to Tchouameni, and were left rummaging around the bargain bins as the September 1st deadline approached, ultimately taking Arthur on loan from Juventus.
FSG should have found Tchouameni backup for Liverpool
We understand King’s point, and FSG do deserve credit for being willing to sanction a £60m deal for Klopp.
However, Tchouameni would have represented a significant addition at Anfield, and the fact he was targeted suggests the Reds felt they needed a heavyweight midfield signing.
They absolutely did need one, and still do, so it baffles us as to why no alternative was lined up.
You cannot put all of your eggs into one basket at this level of football.
In our view, it is as if FSG simply said “oh well Jürgen, we tried” and decided not to make a marquee midfield addition.
It has cost Liverpool this season as they currently find themselves eighth in the Premier League – hopefully, an alternative to Tchouameni arrives at some point in 2023.
