Report: Former Toffees boss has urged Liverpool star to reject new Anfield contract

Liverpool fans’ biggest wish ahead of the new season at the moment is to sign Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara. The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, but there have recently been many conflicting reports.

Sky Sports claimed a little over a week ago that Jurgen Klopp had no plans to sign Thiago due to the number of central midfielders already at his disposal.

The Reds have Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Takumi Minamino and young Curtis Jones, which makes the need for another one minimal.

However, if one of the above-mentioned players decides to leave the club this summer, a move for Thiago could become a necessity. Liverpool fans might just have got their wish, as one of their midfielders is said to be on another club’s shortlist.

Dutch outlet Algemeen Daglad claim today that new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum high on his wish list ahead of the start of the new season.

The former Everton boss knows the Liverpool star very well having managed him in the Dutch national team. Wijnaldum is yet to sign a new deal at Liverpool, despite having less than a year left on his current contract.

The report claims that Koeman has urged Wijnaldum not to sign a new contract at Liverpool. The new Barcelona boss wants to bring his compatriot to the Camp Nou in the coming days, but it might not be straight forward.

Klopp really liked Wijnaldum in his system. The Liverpool boss even labelled the Dutchman as ‘the perfect midfielder’ thanks to his skill-set with and without the ball at his feet (LiverpoolFC.com).

It will be interesting to see if Wijnaldum decides to jump ship this summer. As a free agent next year, he will be able to command a much more lucrative contract ,which might just tempt him to stay with the Reds for another season.
