The former Rangers loanee Russell Martin is reportedly set for a return to football, two months after Norwich City released him.

Martin spent the second half of last season on loan at Ibrox, but failed to earn a permanent contract with the team now managed by Steven Gerrard.

There was no place for him at Norwich either and, according to Sky Sports [08:33, October 19th live blog], the defender will join Walsall as a player-coach on Friday.

Martin spent the best part of a decade associated with Norwich, whom he joined from Peterborough United, initially on loan, in 2009.

In total, the 32-year-old played 308 times for the Canaries, with many of those appearances coming as captain, before his move to Rangers.

He was used a further 17 times by the Ibrox side, then managed by the former Norwich youth coach Graeme Murty, who has since resumed his role within the Rangers academy.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers have since invested heavily in Martin’s position, recruiting Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall during the summer transfer window.

Were Rangers right not to re-sign the former Norwich City man?
