Andrea Pirlo, who was once on Everton’s radar to replace Carlo Ancelotti, is now being eyed by FC Barcelona.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the former Juventus manager is being considered to replace Ronald Koeman. The ex-Everton boss is under huge pressure from the Catalan board after a 3-0 loss in the UEFA Champions League to Portuguese side Benfica.
Barcelona have been poor this campaign with the La Liga giants sixth in the standings. Koeman, who was at Everton for just over a year, is likely to leave the Catalan side soon.
And Pirlo is one of the names on a list of potential replacements.
The Italian football legend on Everton’s radar before Rafa Benitez took up the position as manager. Ex-Toffees manager Roberto Martinez is another name that Barcelona are looking at to replace Koeman, as well as Xavi.
As per the report, the Barcelona board are fans of Pirlo for multiple reasons. Indeed, the Italian coach is a free agent, and members of the club view him as a similar manager to Frank Rijkaard. Moreover, the Dutchman won the Champions League with the Catalan giants in 2006.
Indeed, it would be a stunning turn of events from Pirlo from failing to land the Everton job to taking over the hot seat at Barcelona. Although given the club’s fragility, it will be a huge undertaking for the Italian coach.
And in hindsight, Everton made the right decision appointing Benitez. With the Spanish manager impressing the Goodison Park faithful in the early games of the Premier League season.
