According to The Northern Echo, Eibar defender Florian Lejeune is set to travel to England in order to undergo a medical with Newcastle United.

The Magpies have tied up one deal this summer by handing a permanent deal to winger Christian Atsu following a loan spell from Chelsea, and manager Rafael Benitez needs more new faces this summer.

With Newcastle looking to stay in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship, Benitez may well be looking to boost his defensive options despite already having Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles at his disposal.

Chancel Mbemba’s up-and-down season and Grant Hanley’s disappointing season mean that Newcastle should look to sign another centre back, and it seems that a deal is now close.

The Northern Echo report that Newcastle have finally agreed an £8.7million fee with Spanish side Eibar for the signing of defender Florian Lejeune, with Managing Director Lee Charnley agreeing a deal over the weekend having previously attempted to pay part of the deal in instalments.

Lejeune, 26, is now believed to be heading to England in order to undergo a medical with the Magpies, which would finally give him the chance to impress in the Premier League.

Formerly of Villarreal and Girona, Lejeune was signed by Manchester City in 2015, but after being sent back to Girona on loan, he was sold to Eibar last summer.

The 6ft 3in defender impressed in Spain last season, and his displays now appear to have won him a move to England, with his switch to Newcastle expected to go through in the near future.
