Report: Fenerbahce wanted £5m for Rangers target Martin Skrtel

Glasgow Rangers had hoped to bring Martin Skrtel to Ibrox this summer, but it appears that the chances of a deal are now very slim.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Rangers would have had to pay around £5 million had the Gers hoped to bring Martin Skrtel in from Fenerbahce this summer.

The Daily Record reports that Steven Gerrard had made his former Liverpool teammate a key target for the Gers this summer and talks had been taking place over a potential switch to Ibrox. However, it appears that the 33-year-old will not be joining the Scottish Premiership side.

The Record adds that the £60,000-a-week star would have cost £5 million to sign, and Rangers were not willing to meet that fee for the 33-year-old Slovakia international.

And while Skrtel may have been a very good signing had the Gers met that asking price, it is difficult to argue that Rangers did not make the smart decision to walk away from negotiations with Fener demanding that kind of fee.

The players that Rangers have been linked with already this summer suggests that Gerrard has plenty of ambitious plans for his first year at Ibrox, but the supporters will not be expecting the club to throw the cash around without caution regardless of their financial situation.

Spending £5 million on any player is a risk. Paying that kind of money for a player who is edging towards the twilight of his career makes a deal a huge gamble, even if he would have undoubtedly improved the standard of the club’s current centre-back options.

There is a long way to go in the window, and a long time for the Gers to perhaps land the kind of player who will allow them to reflect at the end of the summer that they made completely the right call not paying £5 million to bring Skrtel in.
