Newcastle United are reportedly hoping to sign Miguel Almiron, but takeover talks could scupper a potential club-record deal.

According to a report from the Northern Echo, there are fears that Newcastle’s potential club-record move for Miguel Almiron could be scrapped as the Magpies continue to be linked with a takeover.

Mike Ashley remains hopeful that the club will be sold by the end of the year, and the Northern Echo reports that Peter Kenyon is optimistic that he will get the funds together to lead a consortium that can complete the buy-out.

However, the report adds that with no interested party entering a period of exclusivity, the chances of a takeover taking place before the transfer window opens are diminishing.

And the Northern Echo reports that that could have an impact on Benitez’s hopes of getting Almiron through the St James’ Park door. The 25-year-old is apparently keen to make the move to Tyneside, and a deal is likely to smash the club record with the forward rated at £20 million.

However, the report suggests that the club could look for a cheaper alternative if the takeover does not go through. Benitez is set to meet Lee Charnley in the coming days to get an update on the situation in January.

Missing out on Almiron could be a massive blow for the Magpies. After scoring 13 times and contributing 11 assists in Major League Soccer this season, it is not difficult to see why Benitez is a fan.

And having been linked for a while now, it would be no surprise if Benitez had put a lot of time and energy into their pursuit of Almiron. Not signing him now therefore, would be a huge setback.
