A report in The Rotherham Advertiser has explained why a pair of present-or-past Sheffield United players failed to join Rotherham United this summer.
Rotherham are said to have been keen on signing both Ben Heneghan, the centre-back Sheffield United eventually loaned to Blackpool, and Conor Washington, the striker who joined Hearts after his Blades deal expired.
But it is claimed that Paul Warne, the Millers boss, was not prepared to give Heneghan the playing-time assurances he craved, with Paul Davis, the article’s author adding: ‘You fight your way into a Warne team, not walk into it’.
And according to Davis, Washington’s wage demands were simply too high for Rotherham.
Rotherham eventually signed Adam Thompson, the former Bury player, in Heneghan’s position, while Carlton Morris and Freddie Ladapo arrived in that of Washington.
The pair are just two of a number of players allowed to leave Sheffield United in the wake of the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League.
Sheffield United had previously recruited Phil Jagielka, the former Everton and England defender, along with Oliver McBurnie and Lys Mousset, the respective ex-Swansea City and Bournemouth strikers.
