Aston Villa have been linked with manager Roberto Martinez.
According to Sky Sports, Roberto Martinez is now out of the running to take over as Aston Villa manager, as he wants to achieve success as Belgium boss.
Villa sacked manager Steve Bruce last week, bringing an end to his two-year reign after just one win in nine games, with the 3-3 home draw with Preston North End proving to be his final match in charge.
Villa must now find a replacement, with new owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens looking to make their first managerial appointment since taking the reins of the club, and a host of names have been linked.
Belgium coach Thierry Henry has been heavily linked with the post over the last few days, but a twist arrived when Belgium boss and Henry’s superior Roberto Martinez was linked too.
Now though, Sky Sports report that Martinez is out of the running for the job, as he instead wants to stay and achieve real success with Belgium rather than head back into club management in the Championship.
Martinez was the surprise choice to replace Belgium boss Marc Wilmots following the 2016 European Championships, but he guided Belgium to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia this summer.
The Spaniard’s reputation has completely recovered following his stint as Everton manager, and Villa would have considered his appointment a major coup having failed to land him under much better circumstances in 2011.
However, just as links to Henry are dying down, it seems that Villa won’t be landing Martinez either, as their search for a new boss goes on.
