Report explains why Newcastle rejected two loan bids for Henri Saivet

Newcastle United are reportedly hoping to offload Henri Saivet this summer, but not on loan.

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Newcastle have rejected loan offers from Henri Saivet from Sivasspor and Bursaspor with the Magpies hoping to offload the midfielder on a permanent basis.

Saivet has never managed to hold down a regular spot in the Newcastle side. Shortly after his arrival at St James’ Park, Rafa Benitez was appointed the club’s manager, and the Senegal international has subsequently made just one league appearance during the Spaniard’s tenure.

Much of his time on Newcastle’s books has been spent out on loan, with Saint-Etienne taking him during the Magpies’ Championship title-winning campaign, while Sivasspor signed him on a temporary basis in January.

And it appears that the Turkish side were hoping to bring him back for another spell this summer, with The Northern Echo reporting that they and Bursaspor had made loan bids for the 27-year-old.

However, The Northern Echo adds that Newcastle have rejected the offers as they hope to sell Saivet on a permanent basis and are reaching out to Ligue 1 sides in the hope of convincing them to take on his £35,000-a-week wages – a task that is reportedly proving difficult.

It would be a huge surprise if Saivet remained at St James’ Park next season. His goal and performance in the win over West Ham back in December seemed to come at the perfect time for the former Bordeaux man to potentially prove that he deserved a chance in Benitez’s ranks ahead of the January transfer window.

The fact that he was still able to leave less than a month later certainly suggested that the writing was on the wall for his Newcastle spell, and Benitez appears to be hoping to bring a definitive end to this chapter in Saivet’s career during the coming months.
