Leeds United are poised to sign Jamal Blackman on loan from Chelsea.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Chelsea view Jamal Blackman as a future No. 1, meaning Leeds United are unlikely to secure him permanently in 2019.
The Whites have already landed Lewis Baker on loan from Chelsea for the season, and Blackman is set to join him for the 2018-19 campaign after undergoing a medical.
With Felix Wiedwald and Andrew Lonergan both offloaded this summer, Leeds have needed a goalkeeper, and former Sheffield United loanee Blackman comes in to presumably start for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell may be developed slowly behind him, and whilst some Leeds fans may want a permanent goalkeeper, the odds of landing Blackman appear slim.
The Yorkshire Evening Post report that Chelsea still see Blackman as a future first-choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge, but were willing to let him go out on loan as he’d be behind both Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.
Chelsea seemingly still have big plans for the 24-year-old, and if true, Leeds would surely have no chance of landing Blackman permanently at the end of his loan deal at Elland Road.
Things can of course change; Courtois could yet commit his future to the club and be first choice for years to come, whilst Chelsea may need to see Blackman develop considerably on his Sheffield United spell in order to believe that he can truly be No. 1 stopper at Stamford Bridge.
It seems though that Leeds won’t be able to purchase Blackman, and with Peacock-Farrell potentially their number one of the future, a one-year loan may just be ideal for all parties.
