Arsenal target Orkun Kokcu has rejected a new contract at Feyenoord and now, thanks to claims from Algemeen Dagblad, we know why.

The Gunners do not exactly have an endless supply of cash available to them this summer. So it speaks volumes about this teenager’s ability that, according to The Mail, Arsenal are ready to invest a sizeable portion of their transfer budget in bringing him to the Emirates.

Talks have taken place between the two parties with Kokcu expected to set the Premier League giants back a cool £23 million.

Quite the show of faith in a dynamic attacking midfielder who has just one season of regular first-team football under his belt.

In what felt like a major boost to Arsenal’s hopes, Voetbal International claim that Kokcu has rejected the chance to sign a new contract with Feyenoord as he closes in on a move away from one of Dutch football’s biggest clubs.

At the time, it was unsure why the Turkey U21 international had decided against putting pen to paper. But, according to AD, the issue is a financial one.

Kokcu is apparently concerned that his impressive displays in 2019/20 have not been rewarded with a substantial pay rise. Reading between the lines, it’s pretty clear that the fresh terms offered by Feyenoord did not exactly meet his expectations.

Arsenal may be operating on a shoestring budget at present, at least in comparison to Manchester City, Chelsea and co, but they will still be able to hand Kokcu a far bigger weekly wage than the one he currently earns in Rotterdam.
