Newcastle United exceeded expectations in the Premier League last season. Rafa Benitez’s departure cast a shadow of doubt around St. James’ Park with many fans fearing the worst.

Steve Bruce’s welcome wasn’t what he would have expected. Not many people gave the former Sunderland boss a chance but he did extremely well to help Newcastle finish 13th in the league table.

The last few months have been very difficult for Newcastle fans. The dream of a new, wealthy and ambitious owner was sold but it now looks like Mike Ashley will stay in charge for another year at least.

Club-record signing Joelinton had a very difficult debut campaign. It was pretty evident that he needed some help up top and many hoped for a new striker to come in this summer.

Andy Carroll’s injury record makes him a huge risk to depend upon while Dwight Gayle, despite his decent performances in the final few games of last season, isn’t someone who can help Newcastle break into the top half of the league table.

Bruce clearly has a lot of faith in Gayle but if a latest report is to be believed, he will have to dip into the transfer market even if he initially felt that he could do with just the Englishman and Joelinton.

Gayle could miss the rest of this year

The Daily Mail claim that Gayle’s injury is much serious than what Newcastle United had hoped for. The striker has damaged his medial collateral ligaments and is due to see a specialist on Wednesday before undergoing surgery.

The initial diagnosis has revealed that he will be out for a period between eight and 12 weeks following surgery. That could potentially sideline him till the end of this year which is a massive blow.

Newcastle cannot go into the new season with just Joelinton up top. They need to dip into the transfer market to bring in a new striker and if reports are to be believed, Callum Wilson is the man that they are trying to sign before the new campaign starts.
