Tyrone Mings has made nine Championship appearances for Aston Villa but Premier League Southampton also want the Bournemouth defender signed.

Aston Villa will only be able to sign Tyrone Mings on a permanent basis from Bournemouth if they are promoted this season, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

An £8 million signing from Ipswich Town in 2015 (The Guardian), the versatile defender struggled to live up to expectations on the South Coast due to a series of injury problems that saw him tumble down Eddie Howe’s pecking order.

But Mings has started to rebuild his reputation since moving to Aston Villa on loan two months ago. The 26-year-old has established himself as a regular starter at centre-back and his impressive performances have helped Dean Smith’s side, who have won four Championship games in a row, reach the play-off places.

The Birmingham Mail report that Villa do have an agreement with Bournemouth that allows them to match any bid the Cherries receive for Mings, but a deal will only be possible if Smith’s side win promotion to the Premier League.

Miss out on promotion and they will miss out on Mings.

The Mirror (17 March, page 72) report that Southampton are also keen to sign the athletic centre-back. Mings’ renaissance at Villa has clearly caught the Saints’ attention.
