The Tottenham Hotspur stopper is still a key player in the squad despite not yet making his debut.

According to the Guardian, there is a very simple reason why third-choice Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Pau Lopez is regularly praised by manager Mauricio Pochettino despite appearing to have no chance of a first-team breakthrough this season.

The 22-year-old arrived at White Hart Lane on loan from Espanyol last summer but with Hugo Lloris the undisputed number one and Michel Vorm an ever reliable understudy, the Spaniard has had to make do with a few 90-minute spells on the bench and a run of under-23 matches.

That is not what he would have expected when he arrived in North London, given his position as Espanyol’s first-choice stopper last season, but according to the Guardian it is all about feeling the positive energy and ensuring each and every player is ready to step up at a moment’s notice.

Pochettino has built a superb squad during his time at the helm, with Tottenham pushing hard for the Premier League title despite Chelsea continuing to edge it with time running out.

Lopez is unlikely to make his Tottenham debut this season, but his treatment in press briefings and on the training field shows just why so many players are willing to bide their time and wait for the chance to prove they can be a part of Spurs’ big adventure.
