Newcastle United reportedly won’t be making a move for Bas Dost.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United aren’t lining up a move for Sporting striker Bas Dost due to fears about a potential legal battle over his signature.
Whilst the World Cup is just a matter of hours away, the bizarre situation surrounding Portuguese giants Sporting has been one of the biggest stories in football this week.
After being attacked by their own fans during a training session, Sporting stars Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Gelson Martins, Daniel Podence and Bas Dost have all decided to terminate their contracts.
The story has been confirmed on the Sporting official website, in which it is claimed that the six stars are willing to return to the club if president Bruno de Carvalho resigns, in what is becoming a stunning situation.
All six players are bound to receive huge interest, with Algemeen Dagblad reporting last week – long before he terminated his deal – that Newcastle United were once again keen to land striker Dost.
However, The Chronicle now report that Newcastle hold no interest in signing Dost right now and are focusing on other signings, in part due to the legal battle they may face if they sign Dost to a contract.
Sporting are no doubt set to appeal the contracts being rescinded, and the Magpies unsurprisingly don’t fancy getting involved in such a potentially troublesome case, even if Dost would be a boost to the Newcastle attack.
29-year-old Dost is a big, physical presence who bagged 34 goals last season and now has 70 games in 90 games for Sporting since his 2016 switch from Wolfsburg, but whilst he could provide a boost for Benitez, the legal ramifications appear to be putting the Magpies off.
