Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side were thumped 5-1 on a day were nothing went right for them.
Rangers’ manager Mark Warburton (L) and assistant manager David Weir
A report in The Scottish Sun has claimed that Rangers assistant David Weir is facing a touchline ban following his dismissal during the Old Firm game on Saturday, but it appears that it was a misunderstanding that led to the incident.
The Gers were already enduring a terrible afternoon at Parkhead after going 3-1 down and had had debutant Philippe Senderos sent off when a challenge on Barrie McKay by Mikael Lustig left the away team’s bench incensed and ultimately saw the 46-year-old sent to the stands by Willie Collum.
Rangers’ Philippe Senderos had been sent off shortly before the incident
But The Scottish Sun is now reporting that the Light Blues backroom team’s anger was based around the fact that they thought that the Sweden international had already been booked earlier in the clash, and thus, he should have been dismissed by the official.
Mikael Lustig’s challenge on Barrie McKay led to the protests
Though the Hoops had been completely on top until that point, the fact that both sides would have had 10 men would have meant that had Rangers managed to sneak a goal, the complexion of the game may have changed and may have set up an interesting finish.
However, the right-back had not gone into the referee’s notebook before the challenge on McKay, and had Weir known that, it seems doubtful that he would have taken his protests as far as he appears to have done as a yellow card at that stage would not have had that big an impact on the game.
