The news about Chelsea triggering Timo Werner’s release clause came in as a huge shock, especially to Liverpool fans.

The German was heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer and the defending European champions were expected by many to complete the deal.

However, it no longer looks like Liverpool will be the ones to sign him. Chelsea have triggered Werner’s £53 million release clause and are expected to complete the deal in the coming days. (Independent)

Liverpool fans will be upset over the fact that a direct rival will be signing Werner. However, the German would most likely have struggled to displace one of Klopp’s famed front three, which should prove to be some sort of consolation.

With Werner gone, what is Liverpool’s summer transfer priority?

The Independent have revealed that Liverpool are likely to have a quiet transfer window but there will be movements behind the scenes.

The Reds are reportedly prioritising new contracts to Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, while also planning to reward other players who have helped the club achieve great things over the last two years.

Van Dijk, arguably the best defender in the world right now, has been one of the biggest reasons why Liverpool have been so successful since the start of last season.

Alisson, like the Dutchman, has solidified Liverpool’s back line and it is only right for the duo to be rewarded for their brilliance.

Tying down their star players to longer contracts might just prove to be better business than signing Werner, but missing out on him might just sting a few supporters every time he scores next season.
