Virgil van Dijk has returned to training for Southampton after a summer of sulking in order to try and secured a move away from the club.

Van Dijk had been sent to train with the under-18 side, but he is now back with the first team group.

The Telegraph reports that Southampton’s players have welcomed his return back to the group.

Virgil van Dijk of Southampton looks on during the Premier League match between Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary's Stadium on December 28, 2016 in Southampton, England.

The Dutch defender had been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool all summer with Chelsea and Arsenal both touted, but Southampton stayed true to their word that they would not let him leave.

In recent years Southampton have been seen as a selling club with Premier League teams signing their best players like vultures.

This year the Saints felt it was important to make a stand, and while Van Dijk could be unsettled again by the January transfer window, he is now going to need to knuckle down and start being professional.

Southampton’s players welcoming him back is a positive and means his transition back should not be too awkward.

Winning the fan over may not be so easy.
