More details of Marcelo Bielsa’s negotiations with Leeds emerge.
Bielsa is negotiating with Leeds and it was yesterday initially claimed by Argentine outlet TyC Sports that he will sign a one year deal with an option to extend by a further 12 months.
The Buenos Aires Times reports that if Marcelo Bielsa wins promotion in his first season at Leeds, his one year contract will be automatically extended.
If Bielsa’s Leeds are unsuccessful in their attempts, club owner Andrea Radrizzani has an option to revoke the second year.
This is important to Leeds because Bielsa is going to be so well paid, earning £4 million per year.
The report claims Bielsa will become the highest paid manager in Leeds United’s history.
Leeds can’t afford to be paying a huge salary in Bielsa’s second year if his first is a dud, or be on the hook for a huge amount in compensation if he needs to be sacked.
Fans will hope the situation does not come to this, but it is prudent business from Radrizzani, who is looking to protect the club.
Ultimately he will be hoping Bielsa’s contract will be automatically renewed if he leads the club to promotion in his first year.
With Premier League money on offer, the Argentine may even be able to negotiate an even better deal at that point.
