The Everton midfielder is a key transfer target for Newcastle United, according to reports.
According to the Daily Mail, James McCarthy will be allowed to complete his switch to the Magpies as soon as the Toffees wrap up a deal to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.
Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for the Republic of Ireland international all summer long, and the Daily Mail reported earlier on in the transfer window that the Toon would have to part with £20 million to get their man.
The 26-year-old is a hard-working midfielder, tenacious in the tackle and comfortable when in possession of the football – all attributes that Rafa Benitez could do with adding to his options in the middle of the park.
The Tyneside outfit could very well be made to wait for their man, however, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Merseysiders will not entertain selling McCarthy until they have completed their deal to sign Sigurdsson.
This has the makings of a potential transfer that could rumble on until the very last minute of the window, and Benitez will be praying that Ronald Koeman can rubber stamp his deal for the Icelandic ace, so that he can force through the signing of McCarthy, and in turn, vastly improve upon his current options at St James’ Park.
