According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are set to re-open talks with Mesut Ozil over terminating his contract by the end of this year.
The former German international has entered the final year of his contract but he has no place in Mikel Arteta’s squad. Ozil hasn’t played a minute of football since the lockdown, and it looks like he will not get a chance again.
The Guardian report today that the former Real Madrid man could have played his last game for the Gunners. Arsenal have left him out of their 25-man Europa League squad and, if Arteta really doesn’t want him, he will likely be omitted from the Premier League list as well.
That has put Arsenal in a very tricky situation. It is clear as day now that they want Ozil gone but, considering the £350,000-per-week salary they are paying him, it makes little sense for him at this stage of his career to let that go.
Ozil reportedly wants £13m to end his contract
Arsenal are trying to reach an agreement to terminate his deal and have planned talks in the coming weeks. Those discussions will not be easy, as the report claims that the German will demand almost all the remaining £13 million left on his deal to walk away.

If that really is the case, Arsenal are in a no-win situation. It makes no sense for them to pay his entire wages in one go just to get him out of the side. They might as well keep him at the Emirates, which will cost them the exact same.
It will be interesting to see how Arsenal fans react to this. Ozil has split opinion from the very start, and both parties will receive criticism over how things have been handled.
However, Arteta has proved to be a success on the pitch without Ozil and, if he can continue winning games without the play-maker, not many can question his decision to leave the German out.
