Niall Quinn could be gearing up for a shock return to Sunderland.
According to The Sun, former Sunderland striker Niall Quinn could be nearing a return to the club having allegedly held talks with an Irish businessman over a bid for the Black Cats.
Sunderland have been in decline for many years now, but after miraculously staving off relegation from the Premier League for a number of years, they were finally relegated to the Championship last season.
Whilst Simon Grayson was appointed with the remit of steadying the ship at the Stadium of Light, he was sacked in October, and replacement Chris Coleman hasn’t fared much better, with Sunderland bottom of the Championship table.
Relegation to League One now looks inevitable, and fans are voting with their feet, as there are thousands and thousands of empty seats at the Stadium of Light every week, with supporters far from impressed with owner Ellis Short.
The American is hugely unpopular after a lack of investment, and The Sun now report that Black Cats hero Niall Quinn could be in line for a return to the club.
Quinn was a hero at Sunderland during his playing days, hitting 67 goals for the club before returning as chairman in 2006 as part of the Drumaville consortium to buy the club.
Quinn was later replaced by Short and ultimately left in 2012, but is now seemingly plotting a similar move to his 2006 deal, having allegedly held talks with an Irish businessman over brokering a move for Sunderland.
Fans would almost certainly rather have Quinn as chairman than Short, as long as he has the financial backing to boot alongside his affinity with the club, and it promises to be a fascinating time off the field if Quinn does pursue a deal.
