According to The Athletic, Everton may face something of a battle to keep hold of youngster Thierry Small.

It’s claimed that Everton don’t want to sign another left back to support Lucas Digne because they are focusing on the futures of Small and Niels Nkounkou.

Nkounkou may be loaned out for first-team experience, whilst talks continue with Small’s representatives over a first professional deal.

Small is only 16, but it’s suggested that he is holding off signing a new deal because his representatives want assurances over his pathway to first-team football.

If Everton can’t promise senior action in the near future, Small may look elsewhere – and he wouldn’t be short of suitors.

The Express reported in April that Leeds United and Arsenal both want to sign Small, who was willing to turn down a three-year Everton deal in search of game time elsewhere.

At Arsenal, Small would likely be stuck behind Kieran Tierney for years to come, whereas Leeds do need to find a left back.

A move to Elland Road may be his best bet if it’s first-team football he wants, but Everton are likely to fight tooth and nail to keep their top young prospect.
