Everton have been tracking the Danish international since his Copenhagen days.

Everton’s move for Werder Bremen midfielder Thomas Delaney is off – at least for this season, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The Toffees are said to have been pursuing the Dane since his time at previous club FC Copenhagen, and continued their interest even after his move to Germany earlier this month.

Bremen agreed to sign Delaney ahead of the winter window for a reported fee of £1.5 million, however, Everton later offered £5.5 million, which the Bundesliga side knocked back.

Undeterred, the Toffees are then claimed to have upped their bid to £8 million, but were again unsuccessful.

And, having made his debut in Bremen’s 2-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend, Delaney is now barred from playing for another new club this season.

According to the Echo, Everton boss Ronald Koeman remains on the lookout for a ball-playing midfielder, adding that the Dutchman could renew his attempts to land the 25-year-old next summer.

The Merseyside club have enjoyed a productive January so far, adding both Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman to their ranks, while teenage midfielder Tom Davies has impressed since being handed a run in the first team.

Would Delaney be a good addition for Everton?
