Everton reportedly failed with a January bid for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

According to The Mirror, Everton attempted to re-sign Wayne Rooney during the summer transfer window – but Manchester United rejected the move.
Rooney, 31, has endured a difficult season at Old Trafford, as he has started just eight Premier League games, finding the net just twice in the league – but he has notched five assists.
The attacker has been largely reduced to playing in cup competitions under Jose Mourinho, and his situation has triggered speculation over his future.
Some expected Rooney to leave for China before the end of the month, but he told United’s official website on Thursday that he was staying at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
However, with the likes of Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order, Rooney’s long-term future may still lie away from United – and a move back to Everton has been mooted.
The Mirror report that Everton attempted to re-sign Rooney in January, and whilst United rebuffed their approach, the Toffees are now weighing up whether to try again at the end of the season.

Rooney joined Everton aged just nine, and became a Premier League sensation in 2002 by scoring a remarkable winning goal against Arsenal at the age of 16, and hit 17 goals in 77 games for the club before leaving for United in 2004.
After almost 13 years with United, which has seen him score 250 goals in 549 games for the Red Devils, Rooney’s time appears to be coming to an end, and Everton could move to re-sign him this summer.
With investment from Farhad Moshiri and a chance to play regular Premier League football with his boyhood club, Rooney could be tempted into a move back to Goodison Park, but having failed with a move last month, Everton must now weigh up whether they want to try again.
