Everton have reportedly approached Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez about potentially succeeding Ronald Koeman.

According to a report from The Sun, Everton have made an approach for Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez about succeeding Ronald Koeman – but that approach has been knocked back by the Spaniard.

Everton have endured a fairly miserable start to the Premier League season, with just two wins coming in their opening eight games and five goals scored during that time – and it appears that the Toffees hierarchy have run out of patience with Koeman after a busy summer which saw plenty of players signed.

The Sun reports that the Merseyside club attempted to lure Benitez – who formerly managed Liverpool and still has a home on the Wirral – to Goodison Park, despite the fact that Koeman remains in the job.

However, Benitez has rejected the chance to move to a Premier League rival, with The Sun suggesting that a potential takeover taking place at St James’ Park may have persuaded a previously-frustrated Benitez to stay.

Newcastle have made a bright start to the campaign, and currently sit ninth in the table, three points ahead of the Toffees having lost just one of their previous six top flight games.

And while there is arguably no comparison between Everton and Newcastle in regards to how busy they were in the summer – and thus, the Toffees may have been hoping their active window may have tempted the Spaniard to consider making a move – it certainly appears that there is a huge amount to be positive about at St James’ Park currently, and Benitez seemingly wants to be a part of that.
