Report: Everton were interested in Huddersfield’s David Wagner

Everton were seemingly interested in Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner as they continue their search for their next manager.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Huddersfield boss David Wagner was among the bosses that Everton considered and failed to land before they reopened talks with Sam Allardyce.

The Toffees’ managerial search has had plenty of twists and turns since Ronald Koeman departed Goodison Park earlier in the season, and just a couple of weeks after it appeared that a move for Allardyce was out of the question, talks have resumed as the Everton hierarchy desperately try to halt the team’s slide.

But the Mirror suggests that Allardyce and Marco Silva – arguably the two main protagonists in the Toffees’ search so far – were not the only names attracting attention, with Terriers boss Wagner also catching their eye.

The Mirror does not suggest how serious Everton’s interest in the 46-year-old was or whether there was any progress regarding any potential move for the former USA international, but does suggest that the pursuit did ultimately come to nothing.

Given the job that Wagner has done at the John Smith’s Stadium, it would have arguably been a good appointment for the Toffees had they managed to get something done.

Wagner stunned many by guiding Huddersfield to promotion last season and they have done extremely well in their first Premier League season, and while Everton may be a step up in terms of stature, it would have been no surprise if he had stepped up extremely well if given the chance.
