According to Lancs Live, Everton were set to bring Blackpool goalkeeper Chris Maxwell to the Premier League this summer, but the deal has now collapsed.

What’s the story?

Well, the 31-year-old was expected to join the Toffees to provide backup for Jordan Pickford, with Andy Lonergan and Asmir Begovic’s contracts expiring next month.

The latter does have the option of a one-year extension.

However, Lancs Live believe it is the return of Joao Virginia which has seen Maxwell’s move to Goodison Park stall.

Sporting Lisbon were expected to sign the 22-year-old glovesman on a permanent basis, following the end of his season-long loan.

However, negotiations with the Portuguese giants have now fallen through, so Virginia will return to Everton.

Clearly, Frank Lampard no longer feels the need to bring Maxwell to Merseyside, although that could soon change.

Lancs Live believe Sporting Lisbon may be interested in another season-long loan deal for Virginia, so if that materialises, talks between Everton and Blackpool could resume.

In our view, Maxwell will be devastated to see his move to the Premier League stall.

It would’ve been a fantastic opportunity for the experienced glovesman, who has made 374 appearances in English football.

Having said that, it isn’t entirely dead in the water, as previously discussed.

In Everton’s case, we’re not quite sure why Lampard needs Martin, if he has the option to keep Begovic as a deputy for Pickford, and also with Virginia returning.

On the topic of Pickford, the England international could actually leave for Tottenham, with Antonio Conte said to be interested.

Newcastle are also believed to be keen on the 28-year-old, who used to play for their bitter rivals Sunderland.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as things could start to progress again if Virginia leaves.
