According to The Times, Everton wanted to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan when he was at Preston North End.

The former Leeds United goalkeeper started his professional club football career at Preston and was on their books until 2011.

The 36-year-old has since played for Leeds, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough among other clubs before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2019 on a free transfer.

The Times has claimed that Everton and Cardiff City wanted to secure the services of the goalkeeper when he was at Preston, but the Lilywhites placed “obstacles in the way of a permanent transfer”.

Succeeding at Liverpool

With Alisson and Adrian ahead of him in the pecking order, Lonergan was always going to be a squad player at Liverpool.

However, that the Reds decided to hand him a contract and make him a part of their squad speaks volumes about the kind of player he is and his mentality.

Liverpool are set to win the Premier League title this season, and Jurgen Klopp’s side will also be determined to clinch the Champions League for the second year in a row.
