According to Le10 Sport, Everton are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Lemar this summer.
The French World Cup winner was once tipped to become one of the best players in world football. His performances alongside Kylian Mbappe at Monaco raised his stock massively, and Atleti paid a whopping £52.7 million for his services in 2018. (Guardian)
Mbappe has gone on to become arguably the best young player in the world but Lemar, sadly, has failed to justify the hype.
The Frenchman, since his big-money move back in the summer of 2018, has scored just three times for Atletico Madrid in all competitions. That equates to about £17.5 million per goal scored in two full seasons in Spain, which is a shocking record.
Everton are in need of a wide player. Richarlison moving up front has left a hole on the flanks which the Toffees need to fill. Alex Iwobi has failed to live up to all the hype while Bernard has not been consistent enough.
Theo Walcott has chipped in an important goal or two but, if Everton are serious about fulfilling their big ambitions, they will need to bring in someone who would fare a lot better than their current wingers.
Lemar would certainly be a massive gamble. There is no doubt that the Frenchman is a hugely talented player. However, an attacker is judged by his goals and just three in two years is a seriously worrying statistic.
Carlo Ancelotti is more than capable of bringing the best out of talented players, and Lemar could well thrive under the experienced Italian if a deal was to happen this summer.
However, the report claims that Atletico Madrid will not allow him to leave for cheap. That could ruin the deal completely for Everton who, like many others, have been hit financially due to everything that has gone on in the world over the last few months.
