According to The Telegraph, Everton want to sign Wigan defender James Carragher, who is the son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Toffees have been scouting the 18-year-old after being left impressed by his display in a youth game between Everton and Wigan earlier this season.

Carragher will become a free agent in the summer when his scholarship deal with Wigan comes to an end.

The Telegraph claim that Carlo Ancelotti’s side are considering offering the defender his first professional contract.

In a separate report from The Times, it is said that Everton have already had one offer turned down.

Interestingly, Carragher was released by Liverpool in 2014 and picked up by Wigan, who placed him in their Under-14 set-up.

He has since gone from strength to strength, and could now be making his way back to a Premier League club in Everton.

So, for those of you wondering, what type of player is Carragher?

Well, Wigan’s official website provide a paragraph about him on their introductory page for the Under-18 side.

The Latics describe Carragher as a defender who shows ‘great leadership skills’ and is a ‘strong’ opponent in one-on-one situations.

Everton can sign the prospect for a mere compensation fee, once his contract with the League One outfit ends this summer.
