Everton are reportedly plotting a late move for PSV Eindhoven sensation Steven Bergwijn after failing to land Wilfried Zaha.
According to a report from the Daily Mail’s live transfer blog (8/8; 8:27 am), Everton have identified Steven Bergwijn as an alternative target on deadline day after being thwarted in their attempt to sign Wilfried Zaha.
The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that the Toffees were preparing a fresh offer for the Crystal Palace talisman after he submitted a transfer request, with the latest bid expected to come in at around £70 million, with Cenk Tosun going the other way.
It appears however, that Marco Silva’s men are preparing to miss out on the forward, with the Daily Mail reporting on their deadline day blog (8/8; 8:27 am) that Bergwijn has moved onto their radar heading into the final hours of the window.
Bergwijn is one of the most exciting talents across Europe. He scored 14 goals and contributed 12 assists in the Eredivisie last season, and he also made five appearances in the Champions League in the campaign.
While some Everton fans would love to see Zaha arrive at Goodison Park, Bergwijn’s arrival would be a fantastic way for the Toffees to respond should they miss out on the Palace star.
He appears to have frightening potential and could be able to create the same excitement that Zaha looked destined to provide had he moved to Merseyside. And his ability to play virtually anywhere in the final third, including up front, only makes it even more likely that Bergwijn will prove to be an inspired signing if Everton manage to get a deal done.
