According to Calciomercato, Everton are eyeing Roma maestro Gonzalo Villar, who is struggling for game time under José Mourinho.

What’s the story?

Well, the Italian news outlet believe the Toffees are considering a January move for the 23-year-old.

Villar – who Roma spent €4m (£3.4m) on back in January 2020 – is currently finding opportunities hard to come by under Mourinho right now.

The 1-cap Spain international hasn’t played a single second of football in Serie A this season, and has made just three outings in total.

Villar’s appearances have all come in the UEFA Conference League.

Calciomercato state he is not in Mourinho’s plans at Roma.

In that respect, it sounds like Everton could have a pretty good chance of completing this deal, if their interest is genuine.

What can Gonzalo Villar offer Everton?

If Rafa Benitez did bring his fellow Spaniard to Goodison Park, the Toffees would have a classy midfielder on their hands.

When writing a detailed analysis of Villar, Breaking The Lines shared that he idolises ex-Barcelona icon Andres Iniesta.

They then add that he’s on the right path to emulating the Spanish playmaker.

In WhoScored‘s case, Villar’s strengths are passing and dribbling, while he’s also quite good at winning aerial duels.

Having cost just £3.4m, we can’t foresee Everton having to break the bank to sign the Roma No.8 – especially as he’s out of favour under Mourinho.

If Benitez really does want him, we think this move could easily happen for the Toffees in January – keep an eye on Villar’s situation.
