Everton are on the verge of officially missing out on the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum to AS Roma, with Jose Mourinho close to landing the PSG midfielder on loan for the season.
According to Alfredo Pedulla, the Serie A side are nearing the end of negotiations with the French giants to sign Wijnaldum on loan, with the last hurdle being on if the deal should include an obligation or option for Roma to buy the former Liverpool superstar.
As per the report, three-time Premier League winner Mourinho has been key to Wijnaldum deciding to sign for Roma, with the Eternal City club already landing one of the coups of the summer in Paulo Dybala, who opted to join the Portuguese manager instead of the likes of Inter Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham.
And now, Mourinho looks to have worked his magic to sign Wijnaldum from PSG, with the Ligue 1 champions desperate to offload the midfielder and his reported £180,000-a-week wages, with the Dutch international struggling for form and fitness in Paris last season
Everton have started to pick up pace in the transfer market this week with the arrival of Portuguese defender Ruben Vinagre as well as their reported chase for Burnley star Dwight McNeil, yet missing out on Wijnaldum to Roma is a blow for Frank Lampard given how important a top central midfielder is for the Toffees.
Indeed, the Merseyside giants are missing that extra bit of quality and grace in the centre of the park, and despite his links to the Reds, Wijnaldum would have been perfect as a short-term solution to this problem, which could cause Lampard problems if it is not fixed in the coming season.
Roma signing Wijnaldum is another masterstroke from Mourinho

As mentioned Roma have already signed Dybala in one of the biggest transfers of the summer, and adding Wijnaldum to the squad is another incredible coup from Mourinho, who is starting to build one heck of an exciting squad in the Italian capital.
With the likes of Napoli and Inter Milan losing key players this summer, Roma could well challenge for top-four with the arrival of Wijnaldum, and signing the midfielder over Everton is another huge sign of intent from Mourinho, who could have his best season in a long time.
