According to the Sunday Mirror (19/07, p70), Everton are interested in signing Universitatea Craiova midfielder Alexandru Cicaldau.

It’s claimed that Sampdoria want to sign Cicaldau too, but Everton think they’re leading the race to land him.

Toffees scouts have been watching him throughout the season, and are now ready to make their move amid fears he may end up in Italy.

Cicaldau has two years left on his Craiova deal, but is allegedly valued at just £3.5million, so could be a bargain.

The 23-year-old has been a midfield goal machine for Craiova this season, smashing 15 goals whilst also chipping in with eight assists.

Cicaldau predominantly plays as a central midfielder but can also play further forward or on the right flank, with that versatility surely appealing to Marcel Brands and Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti needs to bolster his midfield this summer, and taking a punt on Cicaldau for just £3.5million could make some sense for Everton.

He may not be a big name, but the Romanian international’s goal record this season may just get some fans excited about his potential bargain move.
