According to The Telegraph, Everton are set to interview Wayne Rooney for the manager role at Goodison Park.

The Derby County boss has been working wonders in the Championship this season. He’s had to work under incredibly strict restrictions and with a mammoth points deduction, but somehow, his Rams side are still in the survival mix.

However, if Everton have it their way, he may not see out the season at Pride Park.

Indeed, the Toffees are now set to interview Rooney as they look to replace the recently departed Rafa Benitez, and if the interview goes well, he could well be the next Everton manager.

This would certainly be a popular appointment in some circles.

Rooney is a boyhood Everton fan. He knows exactly what the club is about, and importantly, he’s well ingrained into the footballing culture in Merseyside.

Indeed, Rooney has even gone as far as to say that he hates Liverpool Football Club in the past, comments that Everton supporters will probably love to drag up if he is appointed.

“I grew up an Everton fan, my whole family are Everton fans and I grew up hating Liverpool – and that hasn’t changed,” Rooney said back in 2009.

Of course, you need more than just love for a club to be a successful manager. After all, if all passion was the number on attribute Everton were looking for the Toffees would have appointed Duncan Ferguson by now.

Rooney has been proving his tactical acumen at Derby over the past 12 months, and he may now be ready for the next step in his career.
