Everton defender Michael Keane has endured a difficult start to life with the Toffees, and may now be on his way out after just one season.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Everton are considering allowing Michael Keane to leave Goodison Park this summer – one year after the Toffees spent £30 million on the 25-year-old.

Like many of Everton’s recent signings, Keane has endured a difficult start to life with the club. He has made 19 Premier League appearances this term, while he has also played three times in the Europa League.

Before the season began, many expected Everton to be the heavy favourites to secure a seventh place finish – with the potential to perhaps challenge the heavyweights for a spot in the top six – however, with 11 games remaining, it appears that they may end up stumbling across the line rather than strolling to seventh.

The Toffees sit ninth and boast the worst defensive record in the top-half of the table, having conceded 46 times in their 27 games. And it appears that Keane is set to pay the price.

The Mirror reports that Sam Allardyce is ready to sell the former Manchester United trainee, and Everton are bracing themselves to lose some money on the centre-back.

The Mirror adds that Burnley are interested, but are not willing to go near the amount that they sold him for in the summer – but it appears that Everton are ready to negotiate with any clubs that register an interest.

Is Keane being made a scapegoat?

It has certainly not been a perfect start to life at Everton for the defender, but to suggest that he is the only player at the back to have underwhelmed following his arrival would be incorrect.

None of the defenders available to Allardyce have made themselves undroppable this term. And if Keane – who was clearly a signing made with one eye on the next few years – is now available, several of the Toffees’ defenders should arguably be concerned about what the future may hold for them.
