Report: Everton plotting pursuit of Manchester United’s Chris Smalling

Everton reportedly have a number of options up their sleeve as they look to try and sign Manchester United’s Chris Smalling.

According to a report from The Sun, Everton boss Marco Silva has sent scouts to watch Chris Smalling numerous times already this season and is ambitiously hoping to sign the Manchester United star on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

No centre-back in Jose Mourinho’s squad has started more Premier League games this term, and Smalling has performed fairly well for United. But he is heading for an uncertain period in his Old Trafford career.

The Sun reports that, as things stand, Smalling is out of contract at the end of the season. Talks have been held over a new deal, but the 28-year-old wants an increase on his £90,000-a-week wages.

United can reportedly prevent Smalling from leaving for nothing this summer by triggering a 12-month option in his contract. And should they do that, they will demand £30 million in January before they sell.

It is not clear what Everton are willing to pay, but The Sun adds that the Toffees do plan to make a bid during the next window if United end up extending Smalling’s contract.

It would probably not be much of a surprise if many of the Goodison Park faithful had their reservations about a potential move for Smalling.

On a free transfer, he would be worth the gamble given his experience. But he would have a huge amount to prove if Everton decided to meet Manchester United’s potential asking price if his contract is extended.

And with Mourinho’s men conceding six more goals than Everton so far in the league, there may well be plenty of Toffees fans imploring Silva to rethink any pursuit of the Englishman and instead look elsewhere.
