Report: Everton plot £7.5m move for Leo Lacroix, Brighton also keen

Everton are plotting a move for Basel loanee Leo Lacroix as Sam Allardyce looks to bolster his defensive ranks at Goodison Park.

According to a report from The Sun, Everton and Brighton and Hove Albion are both considering making moves for Basel loanee Leo Lacroix, with the Toffees watching the defender in Champions League action last week.

Lacroix is currently on loan with the Swiss side from Saint-Etienne. And while The Sun reports that Basel have the option to buy, both the Toffees and Seagulls are considering making a move in the summer.

The Sun adds that the 26-year-old is set to cost £7.5 million, which could arguably prove to be a good deal in today’s game if either Everton or Brighton manage to get a deal across the line.

Is Lacroix the answer for Toffees?

It is no surprise that Everton are planning to make a move for a defender this summer. It has been an underwhelming season for the Toffees, and a large reason for that is their struggles to keep the goals out.

Only Watford boast a worse defensive record in the top-half of the Premier League this season, and in Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, Sam Allardyce has two defenders that will soon need replacing – while Michael Keane has also endured a miserable year at Goodison Park.

Lacroix may have been part of the Basel side that beat Manchester City in the Champions League last week, but his form throughout the campaign is not overly impressive, and the alarm bells should perhaps be ringing that a mid-table Ligue 1 side were happy to let Basel have the option to buy the defender when they agreed the loan move.
